Coolest city... Tokyo

COOL, FUN, TRENDY. INSPIRING, USER-FRIENDLY,
SURREAL, WEIRD, SYSTEMATIC, STIMULATING, CONTRADICTORY, FUTURISTIC

Asahi Beer hall designed by Philippe Starck (1989)

In my opinion, Tokyo is the coolest and most fascinating city in the world! It has the best restaurants, bars, museums, shops, clubs, convenient stores, vending machines... you name it... I have been to Tokyo many times since I was a kid and have never been bored. It is unique and there is no other city like it in the world. I think the over-rated 'Lost in Translation' does not do the city justice, it is a stereotypical and shallow view of the city and its people from a foreigner who does not understand the Japanese nor their culture. The isolation and loneliness factor is common in every major city including New York and London, the main difference is the language barrier. A few of my Western friends have lived in Tokyo and were left quite bitter about their experiences. They felt that they were unable to fit in and took it quite personally. What they failed to realise is the complexity of the Japanese culture and society, esp. in a society where conformity plays a crucial part. Besides foreigners, any Japanese who does not behave like the 'norm' would become an outcast in this society. Hence, why try so hard to fit in/ conform? Sometimes, it can be quite intriguing being an outsider, just enjoy the buzz of the city, observe and try to understand and appreciate the cultural differences.

Best time to visit: Spring and autumn

Favourite shops: Too many... but I love Toyku Hands and Loft for their variety of products.
