In Tokyo, there is no need to follow any food guide (forget the Michelin guide), because in general, the restaurants and cafes have very high standards. I have never had a bad meal there (touch wood)! From cheap noodle stands to Mos burger (Japanese burger joint) to fish market sushi bars, it's not necessary to spend a fortune on food. For authentic Japanese food, find some locals and ask them for recommendations, they are your best guides!
Maisen, located in an old bathhouse, famous for tonkatsu pork cutlets. Always packed!
A Japanese friend took us to a basement kushikatsu restaurant in Ginza. Nothing was greasy and very friendly service!
Daidaiya in Akasaka - modern/ fusion Japanese place with funky decor!
Nodaiwa, a 160 year-old traditional restaurant near Tokyo Tower, famous for grilled unagi (eels). However, I didn't find the eels particularly special, and a bit too touristy for my liking.
Ippudo ramen, Ebisu - a well-known ramen chian with fresh garlic & DIY graters. My ramen broth had 2 colours, half black and half white, it was fun just to look at it!
Aburiya Fudo, Aoyama - A relaxing and cool place, but a bit of a problem if you don't speak Japanese. The char-grill dinner was fun but not very filling and quite pricey.
A Japanese friend recommended this basement tempura restaurant (tatami seating) near my hotel in Akasaka. We had to ring the bell to get in and there was no English menu (sign of a good local restaurant). Appetizer + 5 tempura courses, rice, soup and fruit all for 4500 yen! A bargain! Very friendly staff, loved it!
Asterix, Akasaka - Difficult to find tiny basement French restaurant with a bar and a few tables. Only one chef and 2 staff but serving high quality food (everything dish is freshly made in front of us) at bargain prices! Though don't expect great service, everyone working there was grumpy when we visited, yet it was still full!!!
Cafes/ tea rooms
Yummy French crepes!
Traditional Japanese desserts in Ginza!
Mille-feuille from Aoyama
Patisserie Sadaharu Aoki, Midtown - Matcha, matcha and more matcha!
Tea souffle at 'Afternoon tea' in Marunouchi
More tea, coffee and cakes!
